Hiroshima & Miyajima: An American's Perspective on Japan
Japan is a land of captivating contrasts, seamlessly blending ancient traditions with modern marvels. Our recent trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima, easily accessible from Osaka by bullet train, provided a profound and unforgettable experience. As Americans, we learned about World War II and Hiroshima as part of our world history lessons. To visit Hiroshima and see the site of the Atomic bomb was an odd experience but one that we will never forget. Japan was incredibly welcoming to us as Americans, which is remarkable considering that not long ago, this might not have been the case. We reflected on this often during our 11-day trip and found that this day trip evoked many emotions and feelings.

Hiroshima: A City of Remembrance and Rebirth
Hiroshima, forever etched in history, offers a poignant reminder of war's devastating power and the human spirit's enduring strength. A Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park visit is a sobering yet essential experience. The Atomic Bomb Dome, a skeletal remains of a building, stands as a stark testament to the destructive force of nuclear weapons. The Children's Monument, dedicated to the young victims of the bombing, is a poignant reminder of the innocent lives lost.
Despite its tragic past, Hiroshima has risen from the ashes, transforming into a vibrant and modern city. Explore the Orizuru Tower, offering breathtaking panoramic views and the unique opportunity to contribute to a tower filled with paper cranes, symbols of peace and hope.
Witnessing groups of school children walking in single file lines, diligently learning about their history at the Peace Memorial Park, provided a much-needed counterpoint to the somber atmosphere that had pervaded our morning visit to the Atomic Bomb Dome. Each child, without exception, greeted us with a cheerful "Hello, how are you?" in English, a gesture that instantly lifted our spirits. It reminded us of our childhood field trips to historic sites like the Alamo in Texas, where learning about the past was a shared experience, albeit with a very different focus.
We visited the Orizuru Tower, where, for a nominal fee, we could enjoy sweeping views of the city. Additionally, we had the opportunity to leave a piece of ourselves in Hiroshima by folding a paper crane, symbolizing peace. You can drop your paper crane into a building with a glass-lined wall that holds millions of cranes, contributing to the structure's beauty and further symbolizing peace. There’s also a fun slide and several murals, art, and history to explore at the tower.
Miyajima: Where Nature and Spirituality Converge
A short ferry ride takes you to the enchanting Miyajima Island. This picturesque island is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, ancient temples, and the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine's most famous feature is the floating torii gate, a majestic structure that seems to emerge from the sea at high tide.
Wander through the serene island, explore the Daishoin Temple, and immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere. Don't miss the opportunity to sample local delicacies like Momiji Manju, delicious maple leaf-shaped cookies filled with various sweet fillings.
Tips for Travelers:
