Caramella at Planet Hollywood Review: Vegas’ New Italian Hotspot or Overhyped Letdown?

Las Vegas has no shortage of incredible Italian dining experiences, from old-school favorites like Scarpetta and Giada to modern hotspots like Lavo at The Palazzo and Lago at Bellagio. So when Caramella Italian Restaurant & Lounge opened at Planet Hollywood, we were curious—could this newcomer compete in a city where Italian food is taken seriously?

After dining at Caramella, we found it to be a mixed bag. While the atmosphere, sides, desserts, and cocktails were the true highlights, the entrées left us underwhelmed. Still, the reasonable price point and prime location might make it a solid option for some. Here’s how it stacks up against Las Vegas’ best Italian spots.

Caramella Italian Restaurant at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas. A Random Recess Restaurant Review.

Ambiance & Location: A Stylish Take on Italian Glam

Caramella leans into 1970s Italian luxury, with Murano chandeliers, rich velvet accents, and a vibrant energy that fits right into the Planet Hollywood scene. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate Italian meal, this isn't the place—especially if you're sitting on the terrace.

The patio offers fantastic views of Las Vegas Boulevard, but with it comes constant vehicle noise, street performers, and the booming Bellagio Fountains. It’s an exciting, high-energy vibe, but if you prefer a peaceful dinner, spots like Matteo’s or Sinatra at Encore provide a more refined atmosphere.

Food: The Hits & Misses

Let’s get to the real question—how does the food compare to other Italian restaurants in Vegas?

  • Chicken Parmesan – Average at best. While the portion was generous, the sauce lacked seasoning and depth. If you’re expecting a standout dish like Carbone’s spicy rigatoni vodka or even the well-balanced flavors of Rao’s marinara, you might be disappointed.

  • Filet Mignon – Cooked correctly to a medium rare, but the exterior was over-charred, overpowering the natural beef flavor. At a steak-forward Italian spot like Barry’s Downtown Prime or Vetri, you’d expect more finesse in execution.

  • Sides – The real MVPs of the meal. Truffle mashed potatoes, crispy Brussels sprouts, and burrata caprese were all standouts, with rich, balanced flavors that outshined the entrées.

Drinks & Desserts: The Redemption

Where Caramella truly shines is in its cocktail program and desserts. The mixologists craft well-balanced drinks, rivaling those at Lavo and Lago. Meanwhile, the desserts were indulgent and satisfying, making up for the lackluster entrées.

The Candy Shop Speakeasy: A Hidden Gem?

Caramella has a hidden speakeasy called Candy Shop, tucked away inside. With dim lighting, plush seating, and a vintage vibe, it’s a great spot for post-dinner drinks. While not as exclusive as The Laundry Room or 1923 Prohibition Bar, it’s a fun bonus for those who enjoy a good cocktail in a more intimate setting.

Final Verdict: Is Caramella Worth It?

Compared to Vegas’ best Italian restaurants, Caramella doesn’t quite compete on food alone. But it offers:
✅ A fun, energetic atmosphere
✅ Great cocktails & desserts
✅ Reasonable pricing for the Strip
✅ A unique speakeasy experience

After top-tier Italian cuisine, head to Carbone, Sinatra, or even Giada (check out our full review here). But if you want a trendy, casual Italian spot with great drinks and a lively vibe, Caramella fits the bill.

Would we return? Possibly—for the sides, drinks, and speakeasy—but not for the entrées.
